OS: W2K SP3On startup I get the following errors in the System Event logs:Type: ErrorSource: ServerError: Event ID: 2508Description: The server service was unable to load the server driver.Next message in Event log:Type: ErrorSource: Service Control ManagerError: Event ID: 7023Description: The Server service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. When I try to start the server service manually I get the following error message: Could not start the Server service on local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified. In effect there are no network services available from this machine and therefore it can not be seen on the network.- Reinstalled SP3 - no effect- Uninstalled all networking components restarted the computer and installed them again - no effect.Which files are used by the server service. If I know which file is missing I may be able to copy it back from another machine. The 'server' service is File and Printer sharing within your Local Area Connection.

If you don't have 'File and Printer Sharing' checked, as well as 'Client for Microsoft Networks' (wait, that might not be absolutely necessary) then the 'server' service won't load. I'm rather curious as to what you DO have in your Local Area Connection.Additionally, I have seen two conditions under specific circumstances:User is dsl plugged into a single win2k box (home user)1. DHCP is set in TCP/IP, Wins tab set to Netbios from DHCP instead of the proper 'Enable Netbios over TCP/IP'2. PCCillin's Personal Firewall is enabled on this machine, and incorrectly configured (per default) to stop just about anything from working. We turned off Personal Firewall, which resolved the issue, and then activated options in Personal Firewall until the errant setting was discovered (too long ago to remember the setting off the top of my head).
The Local Area Connection has the following:- Client for Microsoft Networks- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)DHCP is running fine, but I have changed the settings under the wins tab to 'Enable Netbios over TCP/IP' (but all other computers are running 'Netbios from DHCP' and are just doing fine.No personal firewall installed. To work from this machine is fine - Network, Internet, everything fine, but no one can see this machine on the Network and access the shared files. Several things to try:start;run;cmdnet view - if you are unable to see yourself,hmmm.net config servernet config workstationipconfigThese should provide ample information as to what exactly isn't running.Obvious moron questions:you DO have a c:winntsystem32services.exe, right?Remote Procedure Call, Computer Browser, Workstation, and TCP/NetBios Helper service are all in your service map and set to automatic, right? Can any other machine in the network mount you as such:machineipaddrC$Provide a bit of data back on this, so I can jump in a direction. Ok, you're either missing a few files, or you're having some serious difficulties. After burning down a machine here, I've discovered how I can emulate your problem-may not be the problem, but its something to start with.1.
Unplugged from the network, I can start the service, no issues, from reboot. This eliminates same IP, same name, etc.2. Structure and files within winntsystem32driversetc. are all called by the lanmanserver, without them, I get your error.3.
Lanman.drv and ntlanman.dll, are both necessary to run the lanmanserver (btw, the server service IS the lanmanserver, and I'm suspecting services.exe calls the lanman.drv and crashes, or fires up the ntlanman.dll, and crashes. Ntlanman.dll is also cached in dllcache, so you may have a version conflict if sp3 didn't write everything properly. Suffice, I'd definitely start snooping between file version numbers in system32, checking to see if links are there, as well as increase the logging on the server service, to see if a better description of the failure can be detected. My gut feeling at this point is that you DO have a version discrepancy, or a file is missing or damaged.
MS makes note of 'out of space' issues, but I'm guessing you know how much hard drive space you have left.Where my gut wrenches is that from your listing, you could be on a domain, talking to a PDC, BDC, or such, and could be having an SID or identity authentication problem on bootup, that is crashing the server, hence, why I suggested pulling the cable-booting up as Admin. Unplugging the network doesn't help. There shouldn't be an IP problems since I can see all the servers and other workstations.- winntsystem32driversetc.
compared the files and structure with a working computer. No discrepancy found- lanman.drv and ntlanman.dll are having the same versions numbers as on an other working computer.
I have replaced them, but no effect. Ntlanman.dll shows up in the system information program. So I think this is working fine.- there are gigs of empty HD space on it- No problem connecting to the DC and other computers in the domain. How do I increase the logging on the server service. I can audit all the user access to it, but this is not what we want. After throwing this at my head tech, the following questions have been discussed.1.
Have you ever edited the sysoc.inf file and taken the 'Hide' flags out of the lines? (winnt/inf/sysoc.inf)This enables you in 'Add/Remove Programs' to functionally see all the pieces and parts of the OS install that MS (by default) no longer want you to see. Remove Simple TCP/IP Services. (This is because it will re-install these pieces when you add services back in the lower steps).2. Disable file and printer sharing from the local connection.
Remove File and Printer Sharing from the local connection. Check services and logs-you should not have a 'server' service any longer.4. Information is actually stored in your Local Connection. Remove the local connection, additionally confirming that the Ethernet driver is no longer in your device manager (view hidden devices to see). If the device exists, remove (uninstall) it as well.5. Your machine will probably redetect the device.this is ok.
Rebuild from scratch. In the Components window of the properties of the Local Connection, double check that File and Printer Sharing isn't an option. Double check services to confirm that the 'server' service isn't listed. If it is, you have not deleted enough in the Add/Remove Programs around step 3.

Go back to the top, and start again.6. Set up all networking in the Local Connection, without adding File and Printer Sharing.
Check that you ARE capable of connecting to other machines, internet, etc. Add File and Printer Sharing manually. Check the Box, configure your shares.8. If this does not work, please let me know, but also keep this to-do list. We have a registry removal suggestion that could be applied after step 3, but don't want to waste the text if not necessary.Notes: Even though you'll notice that the server service has no dependencies, it's a bold faced lie. It DOES touch much of the core of Win2k, and these other components store almost all of these dependencies in the registry at a minimum of three separate HKEYLOCALMachine locations.
